Ease in Bodice: Aldrich

In the article Why Upper Bust rather than Bust? the conclusions I come to are based what I see in other block making instructions.  In that article, I state how much ease Aldrich & Armstrong's block send up with across the Bust and the Upper Bust.  This article is showing (proving) how I came up with those figures.  The other related article is: Ease in Bodice: General.

Amount of ease in blocks created using Aldrich's Method

I have created a block with Aldrich's method, using her size 10 measurements, closed the shoulder dart (moved it to the side seam) to see the underarm width more easily, and did the waist shaping as per her instructions.  I have based the bust depth on the bust point. Following find a summary of the amounts of I have calculated for ease in the Bodice Block (for Sleeves) and her Sleeveless Block. Scroll further below to find images with the details for these measurements.

Ease in Bodice Block

  • (approx) 12.5 cm (5 inches) ease in the underarm/upper bust
  • (approx) 7 cm (2.75 inches) in the bust

Ease in Sleeveless Block

  • (approx) 5.86 cm (2.31 inches) in the underarm/upper bust
  • (approx) 2.36 cm (1 inch) in the bust

  • The green measurements are the underarm measurements.  Added together then multiplied by two (since the block is half the body) gives a total of 91.58 cm. Less the actual underarm measurement, 79 cm, results in approx 12.5cm (5 inches) ease at the underarm level.
  • The red measurements are the bust measurements.  Added together then multiplied by two gives a total of 91.06 cm.  Less the actual bust measurement results in approx 7cm (2.75in) ease.

  • The green measurements are the underarm measurements.  Added together then multiplied by two (since the block is half the body) gives a total of 84.86 cm. Less the actual underarm measurement, 79 cm, results in approx 5.86 cm (2.31 inches) ease at the underarm level.
  • The red measurements are the bust measurements.  Added together then multiplied by two gives a total of 86.36 cm.  Less the actual bust measurement results in approx 2.36 cm (1 in) ease.
